“HOW MAY ICT BE USED IN THE FIELD OF MEDICINE”

INTRODUCTION:

Continuous developments in information and communication technologies (ICT) have result in an increasing use of these technologies in the practice of medicine and in the provision of medical care. ICT has changed the social picture in respect of the practice of medicine bringing a broad perspective to begin the discussions. Computers in biology and medicine are a medium of international communication of the revolutionary advances being made in the application of the computer to the fields of bioscience and medicine.

Ict is widely being used in the medical equipment ,internet, patient’s record, communication, research purposes and has found it’s applicati
CAT SCANNER
MICROPROCESSORS
COMPUTER GUIDED LASERS
TELECONFERENCING
WIRELESS
HANDHELD
WEB MRI SCANNER
BASED SUPPORT AND DIAGNOSIS etc…
Medical equipment is becoming increasingly more sophisticated principally as a result of advances in ICTs. However, while these systems offer powerful tools for diagnosis; they require certain economies of scale for their effective usage.
For example: CAT and MRI scanners, imaging devices, depend on computers to process their data into a readable format.CAT or CT scanners stands for COMPUTED AXIAL TOMOGRAPHY or COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY

 INTERNET:
Internet is a basic application of ICT which provides online diagnosis, Medical dictionaries, Alternative treatments, online research on critical diseases .The internet has many sites to do with medical matters. People look up information on health, life-style, or diet. Many people use the Internet to diagnose and treat themselves for their illnesses. They often look for alternative treatments, because they are fed up with their doctors and the long waits for treatment
 Microprocessors: Microprocessor are computer chips which are used in the machines used in the operations and diagnoses of patients .For example the doctors recommend a pacemaker for people with a heart problem. It controls the heart beat and prevents a severe heart attack.
 Computer guided lasers: have been used in operations, including the removal of BRAIN TUMORS. These new machines help with the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Therefore a big number of patients rely on computer-controlled equipment.
 PATIENTS RECORDS:

ICT has made a massive impact in medicine beyond doctors’ and hospital databases .ICT embodies a powerful clinical tool that keeps the patient's medical record and helps the user to keep all the medical records on a single screen in the form of chart so that it’s easy for the user and does not need to sort out all the files.
There has been a gradual move to store all patients’ records in digital format.

 COMMUNICATION:
ICT can be used for exchange of medical information through the internet, it is possible to set up facilities for intensive patient monitoring service which can enable doctors to watch their information With broadband facility and video conferencing, doctors in one part of the country, or in any part of the world for that matter, can consult with other specialists in any part of the world on any medical case of interest.
 TELECONFERENCING: has been used to share expertise. Surgeons in one country have helped those in another. This has helped many doctors to give the patient best possible treatment.

 WIRE LESS TRANSMISSSION: helps medical personnel, transport workers and hospitals can keep in touch. Each injured person has a PIC around their neck which monitors them and personnel have hand held PDAs to enter information about the patient.

 RESEARCH:
ICT has changed the way in which medical research is conducted. ICT has made a massive impact in medicine in hospital databases. Operational search can be done

ICT has changed the way in which medical research is conducted. ICT has made a massive impact in medicine in hospital databases. Operational search can be done by the specialists from different countries. It is used for modeling new drugs. New search about diagnosis over internet can be done.

 CONCLUSION:

Thus it is concluded that the use information and communication technology in the field of medicine is of great importance. It carries much significance in medical treatment and practice. As a society progresses, the ICT industry will play the role of the foundation for all industries. All industries, including agriculture, forestry, fisheries, logistics, traffic, electric power, and healthcare will be able to take ICT for granted.
